North Korea's Olympic History
Early Participation and Recent Performances
North Korea, officially known as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), made its Olympic debut in 1964, participating exclusively in the Winter Olympic Games that year. The DPRK's first Summer Olympic appearance came in 1972, and it has since competed in both Summer and Winter Games.
In the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, North Korea sent a delegation of 58 athletes, its largest Olympic contingent to date. The country has a modest Olympic medal tally, with 58 medals in total, including 16 gold medals.
Notable Achievements and Medal Winners
Some of North Korea's most prominent Olympic medalists include:
- Kim Un-guk (gold in weightlifting, 2012 London Olympics)
- Kim Hyang-mi (gold in judo, 2016 Rio Olympics)
- Ri Se-gwang (gold in gymnastics, 2012 London Olympics)
North Korea has also won medals in cooperation with other nations in mixed-NOC events, such as the Unified Korean Team at the 2018 Winter Olympics.
Olympic Infrastructure and Support
The DPRK Olympic Committee was founded in 1953 and recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1957. The country has invested heavily in Olympic infrastructure, including sports facilities and training programs.
Despite its limited economic resources, North Korea continues to prioritize Olympic participation and achievements. The country's athletes receive extensive support from the government and are often considered national heroes.
